You bought a Fire TV Stick, but you don’t know what to do once you open the box. This article is for people like that. Skipping the difficult stuff, I’ll explain everything in order so you can start using it the day it arrives.

The new 2026 model has a slimmer body and a new remote. But what you need to do is basically the same. Once you learn it, the second device and beyond take 10 minutes or less.

1. Open the box and check the contents

First, unbox it. Let’s lay out what’s included.

  • The Fire TV Stick itself
  • Voice remote (often with batteries)
  • USB cable (Type-A to C, etc.)
  • Power adapter
  • Manual

Whether a power adapter is included depends on the model. If it isn’t, get a phone-charging adapter rated at 5V/1A or more. Powering it from the TV’s USB port can make it unstable due to a lack of power, so if possible I recommend drawing power from an outlet.

2. Plug it into the TV’s HDMI port

Plug the Fire TV Stick directly into the TV’s HDMI port. If space is too tight to plug it in, use the included HDMI extender cable. Using the extender also tends to make it more stable by avoiding signal interference.

Once it’s in, connect the USB cable to the device and the other end to the power adapter. Turn on the TV and check the input switching with the remote’s power button. If the Amazon logo appears on screen, you’ve succeeded.

3. Pair the remote

Follow the on-screen instructions to pair the remote. In most cases, pairing starts automatically just by putting the batteries in the remote. If it doesn’t respond, try holding the remote’s home button for about 10 seconds. The LED blinks and it enters pairing mode.

The new remote’s button layout has changed a little. The power and volume buttons can now control the TV, which reduces the hassle of using it alongside the TV’s remote. That’s a quietly handy point.

4. Connect to Wi-Fi

Choose your home Wi-Fi from the list of networks shown on screen and enter the password. If you can use the 5GHz band, choosing it tends to make 4K video playback more stable. If the router is far away, simply bringing the Fire TV Stick out to the front with the extender cable instead of hiding it behind the TV can improve the signal.

5. Sign in with your Amazon account

If you have an Amazon account, sign in with it. If you don’t, you can create one right there. Once you sign in, Prime Video content and apps you’ve already purchased are linked automatically. At this point it asks “Do you want to carry over your Amazon account’s 1-Click settings?”, but you can choose according to your preference. You can change it later in the settings.

6. Finish the initial setup

After that, follow the on-screen instructions through setting up parental controls (viewing restrictions), agreeing to data collection and so on. It’s fine to skip all of them. When the setup is finished, the home screen appears. Up to this point takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes.

7. Try installing some apps

Open the “Amazon Appstore” from “Apps” on the home screen, search for the apps you want to use and install them. Almost all the major ones are there: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, TVer, U-NEXT, ABEMA and more. Press the remote’s voice search button and say “Netflix”, and you’ll find it in one go.

A word of caution here. The Fire TV Stick is Android-based, but you can’t use the Google Play Store. For apps that aren’t in Amazon’s store, there’s a way to install the APK directly using an app called Downloader. However, apps installed from outside the official store are at your own risk. Decide for yourself what to install. I’ve tried a few myself, but many apps don’t work or are full of ads. I recommend checking their reputation before installing.

8. Some handy settings

  • Check the screen resolution: in Settings → Display → Video Resolution, check that it’s set to suit your TV. Leaving it on automatic is usually fine.
  • Link the remote’s volume to the TV: in Settings → Equipment Settings → Remotes & Bluetooth Devices, choose your TV’s manufacturer. That way you can control the TV’s power and volume with just the Fire TV remote.
  • Tidy up “Recent apps”: in the home screen’s app row, you can hide the ones you don’t use by long-pressing. The screen looks much neater.
  • Adjust the sleep settings: it goes to sleep after a certain time without input. You can change the time in Settings → Display → Sleep.

9. A checklist for when you’re stuck

When it doesn’t work or nothing shows up, check these first.

  • Is the power adapter plugged into an outlet rather than the TV’s USB port?
  • Is the HDMI plugged in too loosely?
  • Is the Wi-Fi password wrong? (watch out for upper and lower case)
  • Are the remote’s batteries in, and the right way round?
  • Try restarting the device (Settings → System → Restart)

If that still doesn’t work, reset the device. Settings → System → Reset. However, the apps you installed and your settings will be erased, so consider it a last resort.

Summary: once the first setup is done, it’s smooth sailing

Once you get through the first 10 minutes, the Fire TV Stick is a genuinely easy device. Plug it into the TV’s HDMI, connect it to Wi-Fi and log in with your Amazon account. You could say these three steps are all there is to the device. After that, just install your favorite apps and talk to the remote. Movies and dramas are no longer tied to TV channels. Start today by opening the box and plugging it in.

For a quiet night in after work, Canal IPTV brings thousands of channels to your laptop or smart TV.
