Before I knew it, the Fire TV Stick had become this small. That’s what I thought when I recently watched a hands-on review of the new 4K model. As someone who knows the first generation, the extent of the change surprised me a little. This time, I want to look back at how this streaming stick has evolved, focusing especially on “the size of the device” and “the remote”.

The first generation’s arrival: 2014, the impact of the HDMI stick

More than ten years ago, when Amazon first launched the Fire TV Stick, Google’s Chromecast and Roku’s stick were already on the market. But the Fire TV Stick stood apart by “coming with a remote”. At the time, most devices mainly used your phone as the remote, so simply including a physical remote gave it a “TV-like feel” to operate. The first generation was a simple black stick that plugged directly into the HDMI port. That said, looking back now, it was thick and had some heft.

Later, in 2016, the 4K-capable “Fire TV Stick 4K” appeared. From around this time the device’s design was gradually refined, with things like heat dissipation and Wi-Fi antenna placement being optimized. But the word “slim” still didn’t suit it.

The remote’s evolution: from infrared to Bluetooth, and then voice control

The changes to the remote are essential when talking about the history of the Fire TV Stick. In the early days it was an infrared remote, and controlling the TV’s power or volume required separate setup. Then, generation by generation, it switched to Bluetooth, and the Alexa Voice Remote came as standard. This meant you could search for content just by talking to the remote, and ease of use improved dramatically.

Furthermore, more recent models added the ability to control the TV’s power and volume directly. This is quietly convenient; it saves you the hassle of switching back and forth between the TV remote and the Fire TV remote. With the 2026 4K model, the remote itself is new too, with an improved button layout and feel. When I actually used it, the clicks felt solid, and I think there were fewer accidental presses.

A slimmer body: the 2026 model finally enters the “thin” era

And then the latest 2026 model. Following the HD model, the 4K model’s body has also been slimmed down. Lined up next to the earlier models, the difference is obvious at a glance. With less thickness, there’s no longer that cramped feeling when it’s plugged into the HDMI port, and it fits better even in the narrow space behind the TV. The USB-C cable for drawing power from the TV’s USB port being L-shaped is another subtle but welcome evolution. With the straight type until now, the cable could get bent and strained when plugged into the back of the TV.

Behind the slimming down are probably smaller chipsets and a rethink of the heat dissipation design. It’s getting smaller yet performance is improving, so you can feel the progress in technology.

Looking back alongside sales: when to upgrade

The Fire TV Stick is frequently discounted during Amazon’s sale events (Prime Day and Black Friday). Some people who’ve been using one since the first generation must be thinking about upgrading soon. In fact, there are many reviews from people who bought the 2026 model during a sale. Sorting out the points of evolution, they look like this.

  • Easier installation thanks to the slimmer body
  • A redesigned remote (button layout, feel, TV control support)
  • Less strain on the wiring thanks to the L-shaped USB-C cable
  • Better streaming quality thanks to 4K and Wi-Fi 6E support

Considering these, you can feel plenty of benefit even when upgrading from an older model. In particular, the remote’s usability ties directly into daily use, so the new remote alone may be worth trying.

Summary: even as it gets smaller, the evolution continues

The history of the Fire TV Stick has truly been a history of “getting smaller” and “improving ease of use”. In the first-generation days, the impression was “a machine that makes your TV smart”, but now it merges the TV remote, can be controlled by voice and lets you enjoy high-quality 4K pictures. What evolution awaits next? Personally, I’m hoping for further power savings and more accurate TV power linking. It’s a device I still can’t take my eyes off.
