You bought a Fire TV Stick, but you don’t know what to do after opening the box. I hear that a lot. In fact, the manual says little more than “put the batteries in the remote”. Here, we’ll go step by step through everything until you start watching videos on your TV on the day it arrives. There’s nothing difficult to do. If you can use a smartphone, you’ll have no trouble.
What to check before taking it out of the box
Inside the box are the device, the remote, batteries, a USB cable, a power adapter and a short manual. Recent models sometimes come with a type of cable that can draw power from the TV’s USB port. However, the TV’s USB port may not supply enough power, so at first I recommend plugging the included power adapter into an outlet. If you cut corners here, it’ll become unstable later and you’ll end up redoing it anyway.
Also, an HDMI extender cable is sometimes included. Use it when the TV’s HDMI port is on the back and hard to reach. If you plug the Fire TV Stick directly into the TV, it may bump into the neighboring port and not go in. It’s a quietly important point.
Step 1: Plug it into the HDMI port and turn it on
Plug the Fire TV Stick into the TV’s HDMI port until it clicks. Then plug the power adapter into an outlet. With the TV’s input switch, select the HDMI port you just used. If the Amazon logo appears on screen, you’ve succeeded. If nothing shows up here, either the input isn’t set correctly or it isn’t plugged in all the way. Try unplugging it once and plugging it back in.
If you miss the TV from home, IPTV Champions lets you watch your usual channels from anywhere.
By the way, at this stage it isn’t connected to Wi-Fi yet. Don’t relax just because the logo appeared.
Step 2: Pair the remote
Open the remote’s back cover and put in the batteries. A message like “please pair your remote” then appears on screen. On many models, pairing starts when you hold the remote’s home button for about 10 seconds. Progress is shown on screen, so just wait until it’s done.
If it doesn’t respond here, check the direction of the batteries. Also, it can fail if the remote and the device are too far apart. Operating it in front of the TV is the safe bet. Once pairing is complete, you’ll be able to control the screen.
Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi
Next comes the language and Wi-Fi setup. Following the on-screen instructions, choose your home Wi-Fi and enter the password. The quietly tedious part here is typing with the remote. A keyboard appears on screen, and you select one character at a time with the directional pad. A long password can be a bit irritating, but bear with it.
A tip: check the “show” box when entering the password. You’ll notice typos right away. Also, if you have both a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz band, 5GHz tends to be more stable. However, if the TV and the router are far apart, 2.4GHz may connect better. At first, choose whichever is nearer, and change it later if you have problems.
Step 4: Sign in with your Amazon account
Once the Wi-Fi is connected, you’ll be asked to sign in with an Amazon account. If you already shop on Amazon, use that account. If you don’t have one, you can create one here. Once you sign in, Prime Video titles start lining up.
One caution here. If you use the wrong account, you may not see content you’ve already purchased or be able to use your Prime member benefits. In households where family members use several different accounts, decide which account to sign in with before going ahead. You can switch later, but it’s easier to set it up correctly from the start.
Step 5: Install apps and start watching
Once the home screen appears, you can already watch videos. Just choose a Prime Video title. However, if you also want to use other services like Netflix or YouTube, add the apps. From the home screen, go to “Apps” → “Get apps”, and type the app’s name in the search box. Choose install and it’s added within seconds.
Where beginners tend to stumble here is that some apps require a separate login. For Netflix, Disney+ and the like, the common method is to open the app on the Fire TV Stick and then enter the code shown on the TV screen on your phone or PC. Installing the app alone doesn’t mean you can watch, so keep that in mind.
Things worth doing after setup for a more comfortable experience
- Check the screen resolution: open the display settings from the settings menu and check it’s at a resolution that suits your TV. If it’s a 4K TV, set it to 4K.
- Adjust the sleep settings: it goes to sleep after a certain time without input, but if it’s too short it may turn off in the middle of a movie. Adjust it to your liking.
- Use the pin feature: you can pin apps you watch often to the home screen. It saves you having to look for them every time.
- Try the voice remote: press the remote’s voice button and talk to it to search for titles. It’s handy once you get used to it.
Honestly, once the first setup is done, all that’s left is turning on the TV and pressing the remote. No need to overthink it. Within 15 minutes of opening the box, you should be sitting on the sofa choosing a movie. Start by putting on one title you like.
