You’ve bought a Fire TV Stick, but did you freeze after opening the box, thinking “right, what now?”? Don’t worry, I was the same at first. In this guide, I’ll explain everything in order, from unboxing and initial setup to pairing the remote and the apps you’ll want to install first. No difficult knowledge required at all. Let’s start from plugging it into the TV’s HDMI port.

Step 1: Open the box and check the contents

First, calmly open the box. Inside are mainly these four things.

  • The Fire TV Stick itself
  • Voice remote (with batteries)
  • USB cable and power adapter
  • Manual (you can usually get by without reading it)

The new 4K model has a slimmer body and a new remote too. There are also types that can be powered from the TV’s USB port, but at first it’s safest to use the included power adapter.

Step 2: Plug it into the TV and turn it on

Plug the Fire TV Stick directly into the TV’s HDMI port. If an HDMI extender cable is included, it’s fine to use it to adjust the position so the signal reaches more easily. Once it’s in, connect the USB cable to the device and the other end to the power adapter, and plug it into an outlet. When you select the Fire TV Stick with the TV’s input switch, the Amazon logo appears on screen.

If you miss the TV from home, Big IPTV Sports lets you watch your usual channels from anywhere.

If at this point you’re thinking “huh, nothing’s showing”, it’s usually just the wrong input. Tap the input button on the remote a few times to set it to the right HDMI channel.

Step 3: Pair the remote and do the initial setup

Follow the on-screen instructions to choose your language and Wi-Fi. Remote pairing often starts automatically, but if it doesn’t respond, hold the remote’s home button for about 10 seconds. When you hear a beep, it’s done.

Next, sign in with your Amazon account. You may be asked for credit card details here, but that’s only for rentals and purchases. If you just want to watch Prime Video, you can have plenty of fun even with free content. By the way, if you’re a Prime member, you can watch quite a lot of movies and dramas as much as you like at no extra cost. At first, I had fun for about a week with just the free content.

Step 4: Screen calibration

A calibration screen may appear to check that the edges of the screen aren’t cut off. Just use the remote to adjust it along the up, down, left and right arrows so you can see the whole frame that’s displayed. It’s fine to skip it, but if you do it, movie subtitles won’t get cut off at the edges, which is more comfortable.

Step 5: Apps to install first

From the home screen, search in “Apps” → “App Store”. The ones you’ll want to install first are these.

  • YouTube: the video site that needs no introduction. Watching on the TV is far more immersive.
  • Netflix / Disney+ / U-NEXT: the standard subscription services. Log in and you can start watching right away.
  • Downloader: I’ll explain later, but it’s essential for people who want to install external apps.

To install an app, just press the “Get” button. When the download finishes, the icon is added to the home screen.

Step 6: The basics if you want to install external apps

I often hear people say “I want to jailbreak my Fire TV Stick”, but in practice all it is is allowing “apps from unknown sources” and installing APKs via Downloader. Turn on Settings → “My Fire TV” → “Developer options” → “Apps from unknown sources”. But at your own risk. Installing dodgy apps can make it sluggish, and there are security risks too. At first, you can have plenty of fun with just the apps in the official store.

Step 7: Master the voice remote

Press the remote’s microphone button and try saying “open cat videos on YouTube”. This is surprisingly convenient and gets rid of the hassle of typing. The volume and power buttons also link with the TV, so you don’t need to keep switching between the TV remote and the Fire TV remote.

Step 8: Little tips for using it comfortably

From here on, a few points you’ll notice as you use it.

  • Sleep settings: it goes to sleep after a certain time without input, but you can extend the time in the settings.
  • Storage management: installing too many apps makes it sluggish, so regularly delete the ones you don’t use.
  • Restarting: when it’s not working well, restart it from the settings. That fixes most things.

Also, the new 4K model now supports power from the TV’s USB, so you can power it directly from the TV without a power adapter. It makes the cabling much tidier, so I recommend it. But check that your TV’s USB port can supply enough power first.

Summary: the first step is easier than you think

Having read this far, you’re probably thinking “that’s surprisingly simple”, right? That’s right, with the Fire TV Stick you just plug it in and set it up. There’s nothing difficult at all. If anything, just remember to have your Wi-Fi password ready. Once the setup is done, all that’s left is to enjoy your favorite content with the remote in hand. Put in the effort for just the first hour, and it’s comfortable forever after. Do give it a try without worrying.
