A slow or frozen Fire TV Stick is almost always one of a handful of causes. Work through these in order before assuming you need new hardware.

1. Restart it properly

Settings → My Fire TV → Restart — not just unplugging it. A proper restart clears background processes a power cut doesn’t.

2. Clear the app’s cache

Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → [App] → Clear Cache. Do this for whichever app is actually freezing, not all of them.

3. Check how many apps are running

Fire TV Sticks (especially the base model) have limited RAM. Close apps you’re not using rather than leaving them running in the background.

4. Move closer to your router, or go wired

WiFi congestion is the single most common cause of 4K buffering. A Fire TV Cube’s Ethernet port solves this outright if it’s a recurring problem.

5. Update the app and the OS

Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates, and update individual apps from the Appstore. Outdated versions are a common, boring cause of playback bugs.

6. Check your actual internet speed

4K streaming needs roughly 25 Mbps sustained. Run a speed test on the same network at the time you’re seeing issues, not just once in the morning.

7. Factory reset as a last resort

Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults. This fixes almost everything that survives the first six steps — but you’ll need to re-sign into every app.

Still stuck after all seven? It’s usually a sign your device has aged out — see our quiz for which model to upgrade to.
